The “American Dream”

Is it possible to live off what you love
Or does obligation lesser the emotion?

Is it white noise and static
superimposing a cherished film?

A nostalgic childhood flavor
mutated rancid over time?

A beautiful afternoon day
ravaged by stinging winds?

Or a unique turn of phrase
butchered through slurring speech?

Is it possible, or are we cursed romantics?
Just fairy tale fools, all divinely ignorant.

Falling for the illusion
of setting suns and shooting stars.

The false security
when pulling a blanket over our heads.

The duplicitous “American Dream”
and the blind eye nightmares

Is it possible, or are we better off succumbing,
and giving in to the monotony?

The timeclock reality
of punching in the mundane

The white-walled cubical
sucking up all the color

The free time violations
from an overtime mentality.

A continuum of labor
with no surety of relief…

It’s hard to see clearly through the well-established murk.

I only hope my life is more than just the hours I work.
